Prabhupada Poisoned? It's Irrelevant -- they can't kill him

BY: MADHUDVISA DASA

May 08, 2011 — AUSTRALIA — The history of ISKCON and its leaders is so dark and demoniac that we who have lived through it and know everything find it impossible to explain it, because no one could believe that such so-called saints could be so demoniac. If you try and explain it, it sounds crazy and impossible and no one will believe it.

But ISKCON in the Zonal Acarya days, when the 11 chosen successors to Srila Prabhupada were being worshipped as pure devotees and non-different to God by thousands of adoring disciples who had surrendered everything -- their life, their money, their actions, their words -- it was very crazy -- very, very crazy...

They say power corrupts, and these chosen 11 had absolute power over their thousands of adoring disciples in their individual zones. They were God and being worshipped as God in their zones. As I tried to explain before, the craziness that developed from this is impossible to explain. Because you simply would not believe it.

I joined ISKCON at the height of this craziness in 1986, in perhaps the craziest place in ISKCON -- Australia, where the god was Visnupada (Bhavananda) and we were all supposed to worship him. I lived in all the temples, I know all the devotees from that time, and I know exactly what was going on because I saw it with my own eyes. Most of it is unbelievable and unexplainable, but I will try to explain a couple of things.

Bhavananda had twisted the philosophy of Krishna consciousness to facilitate his own material sense gratification. We all have faults and that is expected. Of course, Visnupada did not have faults because he was a pure devotee of Krishna, non-different from Krishna... He was not having faults. He was having lilas, pastimes. And he was very much pleased by having sex with young males. So he created a group of "intimate" advanced disciples and only to these intimate disciples he preached the true topmost philosophy of Krishna consciousness -- that the highest devotees please the spiritual master by having sex with him... Like I say, it sounds crazy and who can believe it. But it is true.

"Visnupada" used his position as spiritual master in Srila Prabhupada's movement to collect young men for his sexual pleasure. He created a whole philosophy and justification for this by quoting from Prabhupada's books, and created a whole group of "intimate" disciples who served him in this way, and he kept the whole thing secret from the devotees who were not part of his intimate group.

It is proven in so many ways that "Visnupada's" primary purpose in ISKCON was to collect sex partners. That is the history.

And what does this have to do with the poison issue?

If there is any crime then there has to be a motive. So the two chief suspects in the poisoning of Srila Prabhupada are Tamal Krishna and Bhavananda (Visnupada). At the time of Srila Prabhupada's disappearance, Bhavananda was in charge of Mayapur and trying to adjust the management of the gurukul (boys school) there so he could get a constant supply of young boys for his sexual pleasure. And Srila Prabhupada detected this and was trying to stop it. Prabhupada ordered that there should be women teachers for the younger boys and he started employing retired Indian scholars and appointing them as the teachers for the older boys in the gurukul.

This was completely frustrating Bhavananda's desire to turn the Mayapur Gurukul into a heaven for paedophiles. So Bhavananda really had a very strong motive to get Srila Prabhupada out of the way.

The other prime suspect for poisoning Srila Prabhupada is Tamal Krishna. Tamal was amazingly ambitious and saw himself as the leader of ISKCON, and clearly anybody can detect by listening to the final conversations between Srila Prabhupada and Bhavananda and Tamal that neither of them were humble, submissive, obedient disciples. Both of them clearly considered they were more intelligent than Srila Prabhupada and both tried to override Srila Prabhupada's decisions on many occasions. If you want to listen to these conversations you can find them at here.

Tamal was very angry with Srila Prabhupada for many reasons. There was a big argument between Tamal's Radha-Damodar Travelling Sankirtan Party and the temples. Tamal's buses would travel from temple to temple and preach that living in the temples was maya for a brahmacary, and would take all the men from the temples on the buses. This argument came to a head in Mayapur in 1977 and Srila Prabhupada decided in favor of the temples and against the RDTSKP. So Tamal was not happy about this. To make it even worse, Srila Prabhupada ordered Tamal to go to China and preach there. But of course Tamal refused to obey this order...

Then when Srila Prabhupada was in Vrindavan, he came up with a program that each member of the GBC should come to him there for one month and act as his secretary. So Satsvarupa was the first and he came and acted as Srila Prabhupada's secretary for one month, and went back to his service in the US. Tamal was the second one and he was also supposed to stay for a month and go to his service (preaching in China)... But Tamal refused to leave Srila Prabhupada. He was determined to stay until the end...

So both Tamal and Bhavananda had very strong motives to see Srila Prabhupada out of the way. Both clearly thought themselves to be more intelligent than Srila Prabhupada and both were clearly not submissive to Srila Prabhupada's orders. Tamal refused to go to China although Prabhupada ordered, it and Bhavananda refused to follow the four regulative principles and refused to surrender to the idea that ISKCON was for helping the conditioned souls come to Krishna consciousness, not for grooming them for sex with the gurus...

So the motive is clearly there. And there are many points of evidence. The most prominent being a statement by one of Srila Prabhupada's doctors that the symptoms Srila Prabhupada was exhibiting were the symptoms of one who has been poisoned. Tamal got really upset after hearing this and questioned Prabhupada, and Prabhupada replied that "Not that I was poisoned, he is saying I am exhibiting the symptoms of one who is poisoned..." So the GBC and ISKCON have picked out these words of Srila Prabhupada, "Not that I was poisoned" and used them as a title of their book that "proves" Srila Prabhupada was not poisoned...

But of course, if one is exhibiting the symptoms of being poisoned then it is quite likely that he has been poisoned...

Devotees have also analyzed and digitally enhanced the "poison tape" and found fairly convincing whispers on the tape, where some devotees are whispering to each other about the "poison going down..." etc...

Also devotees have analyzed a sample of Srila Prabhupada's hair and found high levels of arsenic in it.

And Srila Prabhupada's death was very sudden and unexpected by everyone.

And it came immediately after Srila Prabhupada diagnosed his own cure and proposed to recover from his illness. Srila Prabhupada said the cure to his illness was to go out travelling on a bullock cart in the fresh air and sunshine. And he pleaded with Tamal and Bhavananda to let him go with Lokananth on a bullock cart and visit the tirthas, the holy places. Srila Prabhupada said, "Consider I am dead... After some time I may come back..."

Hansadutta picked up on this and understood that Srila Prabhupada is a pure devotee of Krishna and he is saying that this bullock cart program with fresh air and sunshine and milk would cure him, and he demanded that if Prabhupada says this will cure him then we have to arrange it. So it was decided that Srila Prabhupada would go on the bullock cart program the next day...

But after all the devotees left Srila Prabhupada's room, Tamal and Bhavananda ordered Prabhupada not to go and Prabhupada agreed to this order... And very soon after Prabhupada proposed the cure for his illness and this cure was denied to him by Tamal and Bhavananda, he left our material vision.

So the reason I say the poison is irrelevant is that clearly, in my opinion, Tamal and Bhavananda killed Prabhupada. Prabhupada is better than any doctor and here he has prescribed his own cure, but Tamal and Bhavananda have forbidden Prabhupada from taking the cure... So even if there was no poison administered, they killed Prabhupada.

Of course Srila Prabhupada agreed to leave... There is a tape which I have heard but do not have a copy of right now where Tamal is speaking some years later, and he claims that Prabhupada asked him to poison him. In this tape he is claiming Prabhupada wanted to die and wanted him to give poison to speed it up. He does not admit to giving the poison, but claims Prabhupada asked him to give the poison...

In a September 1976 letter to Bhaktijana Srila Prabhupada writes: "Regarding my leaving, I'll not leave the planet until you order." So he is clearly indicating that he will not leave unless his leading disciples want him to leave.

A great frustration for Srila Prabhupada was that he could no longer trust the BBT who were publishing his books. His whole mission was to publish his books and now he could no longer trust the BBT editors, who were making many unauthorized changes to his books. One can look up and read the famous "Rascal Editors" conversation and feel Srila Prabhupada's frustration in this regard. He cannot trust anyone in the BBT... You can read the conversation here.

Another great frustration for Srila Prabhupada was Tamal Krishna's complete refusal to follow his orders and his complete refusal to leave him in peace and go to his service in China. Tamal's mood of ordering and trying to control him was very, very difficult.

I was recently speaking with Brahmananda Prabhu, who was with Srila Prabhupada throughout his final days. Although he can not imagine that Tamal could have poisoned Srila Prabhupada and does not believe this is possible, he does have personal experience of Tamal's defiant attitude and his attempts to order Srila Prabhupada around and control him. Brahmananda described what was to be Srila Prabhupada's final world-tour, but ended up just being a visit to Bhaktivedanta Manor in London. When Srila Prabhupada was in London he was not well and wanted to return to Vrindavan. But Tamal had plans for Prabhupada to go to the US and visit his men there. So when Srila Prabhupada proposed going back to Vrindavan Tamal completely disagreed and insisted that Prabhupada would go to the US. Prabhupada insisted that he wanted to go to Vrindavan but Tamal disagreed and refused to make any arrangements to return to Vrindavan. At this point Srila Prabhupada had to ask Brahmananda to make the arrangements to go to Vrindavan. Brahmananda says then Tamal stepped back. This is another thing which would have made Tamal more angry with Srila Prabhupada.

Bramananda described the whole thing in detail and I could see this whole trip was torture for Srila Prabhupada. When they got to India they arrived in Bombay (Mumbai) and instead of flying to Vrindavan, they put Srila Prabhupada on a train for a two day train trip. There were many other painful aspects to this trip but no space to explain it here.

So Srila Prabhupada's service to Krishna was being frustrated by the BBT, who he could not longer trust to print his books without unauthorized changes, and Tamal, who would not leave him in peace but demanded to remain by his side until the end...

Srila Prabhupada stopped eating and drinking. He did not eat or drink for months. Anyone can see from the final photos, Srila Prabhupada was simply skin and bones. Obviously if one stops eating and drinking, eventually the material body will stop functioning. So it may well be that Srila Prabhupada left our material vision because of starvation. But for sure, he lost his appetite because of the frustrations the BBT and his leading devotees were causing him in serving Krishna... So even in this case, his leading disciples are the cause of his death.

Another fact that Brahmananda reveals is that in Srila Prabhupada's presence, they had no idea of the importance of Srila Prabhupada. They were leading ISKCON and Prabhupada was in the background. Prabhupada was very humble and giving them all credit and considering himself not a very great devotee. And the ISKCON leaders were thinking of themselves as very great devotees who were spreading Krishna consciousness all over the world. So they were not thinking that Srila Prabhupada's disappearance would make any difference. Even Prabhupada asked that question of his leaders: "Do you want me to stay..." and they replied that, "No, we can manage Prabhupada, you can go."

These young ISKCON leaders had a great ambition to become "Prabhupada", to take the position of Prabhupada. And that is the horrible history of ISKCON. Srila Prabhupada disappeared and we get 11 Prabhupada's who all turn out to be conditioned souls, unable to take even themselves back home back to Godhead, what to speak of delivering their of thousands of disciples.

Anyhow the summary is, there is a great deal of evidence suggesting that Srila Prabhupada was poisoned by Tamal and Bhavananda, and maybe others were also aware of this, but even if there was no poison, Srila Prabhupada's disappearance was caused by fasting till death. Prabhupada diagnosed his cure and if he had been allowed to take that cure (visiting the holy places on a bullock cart in the fresh air and sunshine and drinking milk) he would have continued to live for many more years. But he was forbidden to take this cure by Tamal and Bhavananda, so even if there was no poison, Tamal and Bhavananda still killed Srila Prabhupada. Maybe this is not so direct. Not murder, just manslaughter...

Devotees are writing that "Prabhupada is a pure devotee, he can not be poisoned" and "It is all Krishna's arrangement" and so on. While ultimately Krishna's sanction is there behind everything and Krishna fulfils the desires of His pure devotees, still Krishna has given all the living entities a little independence. We can all choose if we are going to serve Krishna or if we are going to serve maya. Although Krishna may know what is going to happen, He is not causing it to happen. To say "Prabhupada cannot be poisoned" is like saying "Jesus cannot be crucified." Jesus was crucified by his so-called followers, and Prabhupada may have been poisoned by his so-called followers.

Of course, the Vaisnavas never die. They continue to live in sound. And those who want Prabhupada dead have miscalculated. Srila Prabhupada has made himself immortal in the form of his transcendental books and the audio and video recordings of his classes, conversations, morning walks, interviews, press conferences, etc.

We are in uncharted territories. Never before has a Vaisnava acarya been able to make the transcendental vibrations coming from his lotus mouth eternal. We can all experience the transcendental vibrations from Srila Prabhupada's lotus mouth now in such clarity, and I can testify from personal practical experience that Srila Prabhupada is not dead. He is living still in sound. And he is living in such a real, tangible and dynamic way that cannot be compared to any other Vaisnava acarya before him. Srila Prabhupada has taken the technology of printing and audio and video recording and with this he has become truly eternal in a way that no previous Vaisnava acarya could even imagine.

So my humble request is that rather than worrying about the terrible history of ISKCON and trying to work out if they killed Prabhupada or not, please realize that Srila Prabhupada is still with us, still living in his books and audio and video recordings, and take full advantage of associating with Srila Prabhupada, a pure devotee of Krishna, through his transcendental instructions.

At KrishnaStore.com we are offering the complete collection of all Prabhupada audio and video recordings for only $89.95. When I joined ISKCON in the 1980's, I paid more than $2,000 for this on 1100+ cassette tapes and 20+ VHS video tapes, and only got a fraction of what is now available on the Prabhupada DVD and MP3 Library. We have more than 1100 hours of Prabhupada audio and more than 50 hours of video. And of course, we have Srila Prabhupada's books which are so wonderful that it is impossible for me to express how amazing they are. I am constantly amazed as to how Srila Prabhupada could have written these books. I have just now read Teachings of Lord Caitanya and I am now half way through reading Nectar of Devotion. Of course, I have read these books dozens of times before. But they are still completely fresh. They are amazing. The more we read Prabhupada's books the more wonderful they become. I cannot explain it...

Anyhow if you do not have it, please get the Prabhupada DVD and MP3 Library and forget about the disaster called ISKCON. Associate with Srila Prabhupada and become a pure devotee of Krishna.

You can get the Prabhupada DVD and MP3 Library here, from KrishnaStore.com.

And if you do not have all of Srila Prabhupada's books, GET THEM AND READ THEM.

This is the first time, and probably the last time, I have written about the poisoning of Srila Prabhupada. It is irrelevant. Even if they did kill Prabhupada, he did not die!!!

Chant Hare Krishna and be happy!

  1. Syamasundara: …you said that sometimes you feel pain, some sickness, due to the sinful activities of your devotees. Is that… Couldn’t sometimes disease be that, due to that? Caused by that?

Prabhupada: You see, Krsna says that aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami. So Krsna’s so powerful that He can immediately take up all the sins of others and immediately make it gone. But when a living entity plays the part on behalf of Krsna, he also takes the responsibility of these sinful activities of his devotee. So to become a guru is not an easy task. You see? He has to take all the poisons and absorb. So sometimes, because he’s not Krsna, so sometimes there is some trouble. Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu forbidden that “Don’t make many sisyas, many disciples.” But for preaching work we have to accept many disciples, for expanding preaching. Never mind we suffer. But that’s a fact. The spiritual master has to take the responsibility of all the sinful activities of his disciples. So to make many disciple is a risky job unless he’s able to assimilate all the sins. (pause) [break]… patitanam pavanebhyo. He takes responsibility for all the fallen souls. That is… That idea is in Bible. Just like Jesus Christ take all the sinful reaction of all people and sacrificed his life. That is the responsibility of spiritual master. Because he’s Krsna’s representative. So Krsna takes all responsibility. Krsna is Krsna, apapa-viddham. He cannot be attacked by any sinful reaction. But a living entity may be subjected sometimes, because he’s small. Big fire, small fire. On a small fire if you put some big things, (chuckling) then the fire itself may be extinguished. In the big fire, whatever you put, that’s all right. Finished. The big fire can consume anything.

Bob: So Christ’s suffering was of that nature?

    Prabhupada: Hmm?

    Bob: Was Christ’s suffering this…

Prabhupada: That I have already explained, that he took the sinful reaction of all the people, therefore he suffered.

    Bob: I see.

  2. It's not irrelevant to know whether or not Srila Prabhupada was poisoned, just as it's not irrelevant to know that Christ was crucified. Perhaps Prabhupada's possible poisoning was caused by sinful reactions of his disciples as explained below:

Prabhupada: ...question was that when I suffer it is due to my past misdeeds? Was it not?

    Bob: Yes, yes, yes.

Prabhupada: That is my misdeed, that I accept a disciple who is nonsense. That is my misdeed.

    Bob: This happens on occasion?

Prabhupada: Yes, this is sure to happen because we are accepting so many men. But it is the duty of the disciple to be cautious. That “My spiritual master saved me. I may not put him again into these sufferings.” [break] When the spiritual master is in suffering, Krsna saves him. Krsna thinks, “Oh, he has taken so much responsibility for delivering a fallen person.” So Krsna is there. Kaunteya pratijanihi na me bhaktah pranasyati. Because the spiritual master takes the risk on account of Krsna.

Bob: So your suffering is not the same kind of pain that an impure person…

Prabhupada: No, it is not due to karma. The pain is there sometimes so that the disciples may know that “Due to our sinful activities my spiritual master is suffering.” [break]

    Bob: …very well now.

Prabhupada: I’m always well. [break] …well in this sense, even there is suffering, I know Krsna will protect me. But this suffering is not due to my sinful activities.

  3. Srila Prabhupada's appearance and disappearance are not irrelevant, imho.
