Uttama Adhikaris or Uttama Aparadhis?

UTTAMA-ADHIKARIS – OR – UTTAMA-APARADHIS?

Uttama-adhikaris or Uttama-aparadhis? – Part 1 -of- 4

By Yasoda nandana dasa and the Prabhupada anugas

In the aftermath of the re-entry in Goloka Vrindavana, of our beloved acharya, His Divine Grace Ac Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, in November of  1977, His leading secretaries informed the devotees of the Krishna Consciousness movement, that Srila Prabhupada had appointed eleven of his senior disciples as acaryas and diksha-gurus.

A brief history.

This momentous announcement was delivered by the secretaries in a position paper issued at Mayapur West Bengal, India, on March 26, 1978. The first official position paper on the position of the new “gurus” stated: ”In consultation with higher authorities.” Who are these higher authorities? When did Srila Prabhupada ever inform us of higher authorities than Him in His society? The secretaries were silent on this point.

MINIMIZATION OF SRILA PRABHUPADA’S WORSHIP

Soon after the meeting, the leading secretaries and founders of the self-appointed acarya sabha (SAAS) started the living guru experimental project (LGEP) The first point on the agenda of the SAAS was to organize society-wide propaganda to promote the myth that the original eleven has been appointed as diksa-gurus [initiating spiritual masters] and were fully realized pure devotees, Maha-Bhagavatas and uttama-adhikaris, to install vyasa-asanas and start simultaneous guru puja directly in front of Srila Prabhupada in all His centers, along with self-bestowed pranama mantras, pada titles, etc…

Several senior devotes cautioned the SAAS that accepting separate worship in front of one’s own guru was a serious aparadha, according to the teachings of the six Goswamis. In their collective wisdom, the SAAS decided to reject the sastric advice, pleading that “this restriction was not in Prabhupada’s books” and “Prabhupada did it, and we can do it.”

The SAAS would not listen to any reasonable argument. The minimization and impudent imitation of the Samprayada-Acarya, Srila Prabhupada, was in full swing. The LGEP was progressing. The pious  belief that the original eleven members of the SAAS were utttama-adhikaris (first class devotees) and fully realized pure devotees was disseminated through society-wide propaganda. Srila Prabhupada cautioned us about minimizing the pure devotee.

THE DANGER OF MINIMIZING THE EXALTED POSITION OF A PURE DEVOTEE LIKE SRILA PRABHUPADA

"Sukadeva Gosvami was then surrounded by saintly sages and demigods just as the moon is surrounded by stars, planets and other heavenly bodies. His presence was gorgeous, and he was respected by all.

PURPORT:

In the great assembly of saintly personalities, there was Vyāsadeva the brahmarṣi, Nārada the devarṣi, Paraśurāma the great ruler of the kṣatriya kings, etc. Some of them were powerful incarnations of the Lord. Śukadeva Gosvāmī was not known as brahmarṣi, rājarṣi or devarṣi, nor was he an incarnation like Nārada, Vyāsa or Paraśurāma. And yet he excelled them in respects paid. This means that the devotee of the Lord is more honored in the world than the Lord Himself. One should therefore never minimize the importance of a devotee like Śukadeva Gosvāmī. Srimad-Bhagavatam The Appearance of Sukadeva Gosvami : SB 1.19.30"

WHAT IS THE POSITION OF A PURE DEVOTEE LIKE SRILA PRABHUPADA?

Srila Prabhupada explains why the pure devotee’s voice is so powerful. "A pure devotee always engages in the service of the Lord, taking shelter of His lotus feet, and therefore he has a direct connection with the saffron mercy-particles that are strewn over the lotus feet of the Lord. Although when a pure devotee speaks the articulation of his voice may resemble the sound of this material sky, the voice is spiritually very powerful because it touches the particles of saffron dust on the lotus feet of the Lord.

"As soon as a sleeping living entity hears the powerful voice emanating from the mouth of a pure devotee, he immediately remembers his eternal relationship with the Lord, although up until that moment he had forgotten everything. For a conditioned soul, therefore, it is very important to hear from the mouth of a pure devotee, who is fully surrendered to the lotus feet of the Lord without any material desire, speculative knowledge or contamination of the modes of material nature. Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 4: “The Creation of the Fourth Order” : SB 4.20: Lord Visnu’s Appearance in the Sacrificial Arena of Maharaja Prthu : SB 4.20.25

SRILA PRABHUPADA REVEALS HOW THE PURE DEVOTEE IS FREED FROM ALL CONTAMINATION.

“…A pure devotee of the Lord does not live on any planet of the material sky, nor does he feel any contact with material elements. His so called material body does not exist, being surcharged with the spiritual current of the Lord’s identical interest, and thus he is permanently freed from all contaminations of the sum total of mahat-tattva.  SB 1.13.550 Adi-Lila 5.36.

LORD SRI KRSNA SENDS HIS PURE DEVOTEE LIKE SRILA PRABHUPADA.

“…For example, Kṛṣṇa comes like an ordinary human being, He comes as a devotee like Lord Caitanya, or He sends His representative, the spiritual master, or pure devotee. This is also the planned activity of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They come to canvass and educate, and thus a person in the illusory energy of the Supreme Lord gets a chance to mix with them, talk with them and take lessons from them, and somehow or other if a conditioned soul surrenders to such personalities and by intimate association with them chances to become Kṛṣṇa conscious, he is saved from the material conditions of life. Kṛṣṇa therefore instructs…” Books : Srimad-Bhagavatam : Canto 4: “The Creation of the Fourth Order” : SB 4.21: Instructions by Maharaja Prthu : SB 4.21.27 : PURPORT

SRILA PRABHUPADA IS A NITYA-SIDDHA SENT BY KRSNA’S ORDER.

Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu has given considerable discussion about nitya-siddha and sadhana-siddha devotees. Nitya-siddha devotees come from Vaikuntha to this material world to teach, by their personal example, how to become a devotee. The living entities in this material world can take lessons from such nitya-siddha devotees and thus become inclined to return home, back to Godhead. A nitya-siddha devotee comes from Vaikuntha upon the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and shows by his example how to become a pure devotee (anyabhilasita-sunyam). In spite of coming to this material world, the nitya-siddha devotee is never attracted by the allurements of material enjoyment. [Srimad Bhagavatam 7.10.3]

SRILA PRABHUPADA CLARIFIES THE EXALTED  POSITION OF THE LIBERATED SOULS COMING FROM THE SPIRITUAL WORLD.

“…You should know that the great liberated souls and incarnations who appear from time to time in this material world are not actually coming back, because they are never subject to material contamination or the laws of material nature. For the purpose of delivering the fallen living entities they come here temporarily and then go back when their business is finished, and this is all under the direct order of the Lord. So the appearance of the Lord or the great liberated souls in the material is different from the appearance of the contaminated living entity who is forced to take birth in the material world due to his desire to lord it over the world…” Letters : 1969 Correspondence : June : Letter to: Vrndaanesvari — New Vrindaban 6 June, 1969 : 69-06-06

BUT WHY WOULD ANYONE EVEN ATTEMPT TO FIND FAULT WITH OR DEPRECATE THE POSITION OF AN EXALTED ACARYA, ESPECIALLY SOMEONE LIKE SRILA PRABHUPADA AND THE PREVIOUS ACARYAS [MAHAJANAS]?

“Influenced by an envious temperament and dissatisfied because of an attitude of sense gratification, mundaners criticize a real acarya. In fact, however, a bona fide acarya is non-different from the Personality of Godhead. And therefore to envy such an acarya is to envy the Personality of Godhead Himself. This will produce an effect subversive to transcendental realization.” (Sri Caitanya-caritamrta – 1975 Unrevised Edition . The Spiritual Masters Adi-Lila 1.46)

Note: As the SAAS and the LGEP developed, many of its members could not conceal their true colors and their resentment of the exalted eternal position of Srila Prabhupada.

A few gems from the past.

MINIMIZATION AND FINDING FAULT WITH THE ACARYA, SRILA PRABHUPADA.

1979 Vrindavana, India  - GBC Meeting. Krsna-Balarama guesthouse.  27 February 1979. Early afternoon.

Not accepting reality.

“It is no longer practical, now that Prabhupada is dead, that Prabhupada is not here, just to emphasize Prabhupada. I mean this is not accepting reality… Wait a minute, who has got those tapes…?”  ISKCON Guru from Dallas, Texas, Late February 1979, GBC meeting in Krsna-Balarama temple guest house, Vrindavana,

More than Prabhupada?

” All the things that Prabhupada wanted done are now being done more than when Prabhupada was here” ISKCON Guru  from South America and GBC representative, late February 1979, Morning Srimad-Bhagavatam class, Vrindavana, India.

SRILA PRABHUPADA’S POSITION:

Srila Prabhupada, you have described the philosophy that the guru is dead and gone [as in post samadhi] as mayavada, materialistic philosophy..

“…It is not that he is dead and gone. That is not spiritual understanding. Even ordinary living being, he does not die. Na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre [Bg. 2.20]. And what to speak of such exalted, authorized personality like Bhaktisiddhānta. He is seeing. I never feel that I am alone …“if you don’t keep in touch with the original link, then it will be lost. And if you keep touch with the original link, then you are directly hearing Kṛṣṇa. Similarly, Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa’s representative, spiritual master, if you keep always intact, in link with the words and instruction of the superior authorities, then you are always fresh. This is spiritual understanding. Na jāyate na mrīyate vā kadācit nityaḥ śāśvato ‘yaṁ purāṇo [Bg. 2.20]. Purāṇaḥ means very old. Just like Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Being. He must be very old because He is the original person. But the Brahma-saṁhitā says, advaita acyuta anādi ananta-rūpam ādyaṁ purāṇa-puruṣa nava-yauvanaṁ ca [Bs. 5.33]. Purāṇa-puruṣa, the oldest person, but you will find Him nava-yauvanaṁ ca, always a fresh youth. That is God. God is not a material, that it gets old. The body gets old.”  Lectures : Festival Lectures : His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami Prabhupada’s Appearance Day, Lecture — Atlanta, March 2, 1975 : 750302BA.ATL

“…So better remain a foolish person perpetually to be directed by Guru Mahārāja. That is perfection. And as soon as he learns the Guru Mahārāja is dead, “Now I am so advanced that I can kill my guru and I become guru.” …Then he’s finished… ” August 16, 1976 Bombay, India

“…The puzzled people who visited Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu were actually seeing Lord Kṛṣṇa, but they were mistaken in thinking that Lord Kṛṣṇa had come to Kālīya Lake. They all said that they had seen Kṛṣṇa directly performing His pastimes on the hood of the serpent Kālīya and that the jewels on Kālīya’s hoods were blazing brilliantly. Because they were speculating with their imperfect knowledge, they saw Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu as an ordinary human being and a boatman’s light in the lake as Kṛṣṇa. One must see things as they are through the mercy of a spiritual master; otherwise if one tries to see Kṛṣṇa directly, he may mistake an ordinary man for Kṛṣṇa or Kṛṣṇa for an ordinary man.

Everyone has to see Kṛṣṇa according to the verdict of Vedic literatures presented by the self-realized spiritual master. A sincere person is able to see Kṛṣṇa through the transparent via medium of Śrī Gurudeva, the spiritual master. Unless one is enlightened by the knowledge given by the spiritual master, he cannot see things as they are, even though he remains constantly with the spiritual master. This incident at Kālīya-daha is very instructive for those eager to advance in Kṛṣṇa consciousness…”. (Books : Sri Caitanya-caritamrta – 1975 Unrevised Edition  -  Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s Visit to Sri Vrndavana : Madhya 18.99)

  1. Experiment for ISKCON gurus to demonstrate what it means to have an uncertain final outcome.
